Volcano 14
Price: $425
I first picked up the block that contained this pipe a few days before cutting into it. I was struck by the very tight birdseye surface of the burl, and the amount of contrast in the grain. I resolved to make a pipe from it, but didn't really know what. This morning I picked up the block and turned it over in my hands while considering the grain and varigation, and it just screamed volcano. Now, I was impressed by the grain on the outside of the block, but once I started shaping the the pipe, I was even MORE impressed. The birdseye is tight and pronounced, the grain contrast is strong and apparent, and the wood is wonderfully uniform with a great grain pattern. Needless to say, I'm quite pleased with the outcome.
Not wanting to add too much to the pipe and obscure the natural beauty of the wood, I used only enough stain to accentuate the grain. The tradeoff is that there's a couple teensy, tiny, barely-there pinpricks visible and not hidden by stain. I've discounted the price accordingly, however.
